For the past 25 years, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has been a hub for live music, showcasing local talent and providing travelers with a unique musical experience. AUS Music Coordinator Michael Pennock has been at the forefront of this program, bringing music to the airport for over a decade.

Pennock shared insights into the history and impact of the live music program at AUS, highlighting the airport's commitment to promoting Austin's music culture. He mentioned the pivotal role of early supporters like Nancy Coplin and Delaware North Companies in establishing and sustaining the program.

Reflecting on the program's growth, Pennock recalled the airport's humble beginnings with one show per week in 1999, which has now expanded to over 1,400 shows annually. A testament to Austin's reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World, AUS has hosted an impressive 17,500 shows since its inception.

Regarding the significance of live music at AUS, Pennock emphasized the program's role in enhancing the traveler experience and supporting local musicians and concessions. With daily performances across eight venues, including solo acts and bands, AUS continues to offer a diverse musical showcase for visitors.

Looking back on memorable performances, Pennock highlighted moments such as Grammy award-winning band boygenius' pop-up show and the upcoming performance by Jackie Venson, who started her career at AUS. The airport has welcomed renowned artists like Gary Clark Jr., Ruthie Foster, and Asleep at the Wheel, contributing to its musical legacy.

As AUS celebrates its 25th anniversary, Pennock shared plans for special performances throughout May, including surprise pop-up shows and a piano showcase featuring talented musicians. The airport's commitment to expanding its music and art offerings in the future signals a promising direction for the program.

In anticipation of the next 25 years, AUS aims to enhance community engagement and equity in its music program, leveraging upcoming expansion plans to create innovative art installations and music stages. The airport looks forward to continuing its tradition of enriching the traveler experience through live music.

To mark AUS's milestone anniversary, a series of live music events are scheduled, culminating in a special performance by Jackie Venson at the main stage on May 23rd. Travelers and music enthusiasts are invited to join the celebration and experience the vibrant music scene at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
