Arrest Made in Connection to the Traffic Fatality at the Intersection of 7th Street and Red River Street

An arrest has been made in connection to the traffic fatality that occurred at the intersection of 7th Street and Red River Street. The suspect involved in the incident has been identified as Tyrone Thompson, a 23-year-old Black male. Cody Jordon Shelton, the deceased victim, was also identified in the tragic event.

According to the update provided, detectives were able to identify Tyrone Thompson as the suspected driver involved in the crash. Thompson was arrested on unrelated charges after being involved in another crash in Travis County on Tuesday morning. The Austin Police Department's Vehicular Homicide unit filed Crash Involving Death charges against Thompson for the incident that took place in Downtown Austin. The second victim of the crash remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The original release stated that the incident took place on Tuesday, March 12, at around 1:09 a.m. Two pedestrians were hit by a vehicle at the intersection, resulting in the death of Cody Jordon Shelton and leaving the second pedestrian with severe injuries. The suspect vehicle fled the scene and continued traveling east on East 7th Street.

The incident is being investigated as Austin's 13th fatal crash of 2024, leading to 13 fatalities so far this year. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward and contact APD's Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111 or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
