Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) marked a significant milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony for the West Infill and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Checkpoint 3 Expansion project. The expansion, part of the airport's Journey With AUS program, aims to enhance the passenger experience and meet the growing demand for air service in Austin and Central Texas.

City of Austin Assistant City Manager, Robert Goode, highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “As Austin grows, so does our airport. Near-term projects like this one will provide much-needed relief on busy days as soon as possible, while we continue to work alongside our airline partners to envision the future of an expanded, modern AUS that will meet the needs of both airlines and travelers alike.”

Ghizlane Badawi, Chief Executive Officer of the Austin Airport and Director for the City of Austin Department of Aviation, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, stating, “We are thrilled to embark on this exciting journey of expansion and improvement at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. As the demand for air travel continues to soar, we remain steadfast in our commitment to enhancing passenger experiences while maintaining current airport operations.”

The project, partially funded by $15.9 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will add 75,000 square feet across four levels, enhancing crucial areas such as baggage handling, concourse capacity, and passenger amenities. The expansion includes improvements to mechanical, electrical, and IT systems to ensure seamless operations and efficiency.

The West Infill project will introduce new features and amenities to the terminal, ensuring that Austin-Bergstrom remains a vital hub for travelers, fostering connectivity and convenience for all passengers.

Travelers can access construction updates, project information, and AUS travel tips by visiting FlyAustin.com. Additionally, a digital media kit with renderings and a fact sheet for the project is available for media representatives.

The groundbreaking ceremony follows enabling construction that began in the fall of 2023. Despite the closure of the original Checkpoint 3, travelers have not experienced any loss of TSA screening capacity or equipment, thanks to the addition of lanes to Checkpoint 2 West.

The expansion project is set to open to the public in 2026, promising an enhanced travel experience for passengers passing through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
